Nurturing Mental Wellness in Hospice Care
Take the time to care for yourself.
In the compassionate yet challenging field of hospice care, our healthcare professionals face emotional demands that can take a significant toll on their mental health.
As hospice owners and leaders, we are responsible for prioritizing the psychological well-being of our dedicated teams.
This issue of HospicePass explores the critical importance of mental health support in our workplace, recognizing that when we care for our caregivers, we enhance the quality of care provided to our patients and their families during life's most vulnerable moments.
Ways to support employee mental wellbeing:
Implement regular check-ins and open-door policies for staff to discuss concerns
Provide access to professional counseling services and employee assistance programs
Offer mindfulness and stress reduction workshops
Create dedicated spaces for relaxation and decompression during shifts
Establish peer support groups or mentorship programs
Encourage the use of paid time off and promote work-life balance
Provide education on compassion fatigue and burnout prevention
Recognize and celebrate staff achievements and positive patient outcomes
Offer flexible scheduling options when possible
Implement team-building activities to foster a supportive work environment
World Mental Health Day
This World Mental Health Day, WHO is uniting with partners to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work.
Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health.
Unhealthy conditions including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment and other poor working conditions, can pose significant risks, affecting mental health, overall quality of life and consequently participation or productivity at work.
With 60% of the global population in work, urgent action is needed to ensure work prevents risks to mental health and protects and supports mental health at work.
It is essential for governments, employers, the organizations which represent workers and employers, and other stakeholders responsible for workers’ health and safety to work together to improve mental health at work.
Action to address mental health at work should be done with the meaningful involvement of workers and their representatives, and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions.
By investing efforts and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions at work, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive at work and in life.
Let's take action today for a healthier future.
Resources and Services
HospicePass is about providing information, and collecting resources, not only for your patients and families - but for you and your team. The least we can do is provide an easy way to find information. Let’s start with a few:
pivotpath is on a mission is to empower nurses in their careers by utilizing their unique skills and experiences to pursue a career that fits their goals and desires. I focus on helping nurses communicate their value when pursuing non-clinical roles away from the bedside.
I have a job board where nurses can start to explore the different types of opportunities out there. I prioritize putting jobs here that they probably haven't even thought of yet. Generally, nurses search for "remote nursing jobs" when they get ready to leave the bedside, but that search is incredibly limiting given the soft skills nurses can bring to any position.
If they feel like they'd like additional support, nurses can choose to join the pivotpath community where they can choose a membership level that fits their needs. At baseline, they get early access to jobs, additional resources, and monthly Q&A sessions. With each membership option, they get access to more specific resources (like a detailed guide to perfect their cover letter) and additional live coaching time with me. It's truly a passion of mine to work with nurses through their career pivot and see them land in new positions!
And finally, there's the Nursing Beyond the Bedside podcast. The mission of the pod is to show nurses what's possible. It's been incredible to share the stories of other nurses who are out there doing incredible things with their nursing career. I hope that nurses can connect with the stories they hear and become inspired to take their own leap. I'd love for you to take a listen! You can tune in on Youtube, Apple, or Spotify.
