Daily Check-ins Made Easy
Margaret had always been independent, but at 83, her children worried about her living alone. When her home care nurse suggested OdessaConnect's daily survey feature, she was relieved it would work through her trusty TV. Each morning, while enjoying her coffee in her favorite armchair, she prepares for her daily check-in.
"Good morning, Margaret! How are you feeling today?" appears on her screen. Using the simple remote, she navigates through questions about her pain levels, mood, and whether she's taken her medications. When she indicates her arthritis is acting up, the system automatically notifies her care team.
The reminder function has become her reliable friend. "Time for your 2 PM heart medication," it gently announces. Reminders have been set up for everything from medications to her weekly bridge club meetings. "It's like having a caring companion who never forgets," Margaret tells her neighbors. "And I don't have to fiddle with any complicated gadgets – it's just my regular TV!"
What Margaret appreciates most is maintaining her independence while keeping her family's minds at ease, knowing that her care team receives survey responses and will act accordingly. "Technology doesn't have to be scary," she now says. "Sometimes it's as simple as turning on the TV."
Designing for the older adult
OdessaConnect is on a mission to reduce social isolation and loneliness in the aging population through a technology experience that is intuitive and non-threatening.
Technology can be challenging for older adults who did not grow up using computers, smartphones, and the internet. That’s why OdessaConnect runs on a device that is familiar and comfortable: the TV.
OdessaConnect turns the TV screen into a computer screen, eliminating the need to manage apps, downloads, passwords, or confusing digital devices.
We set out on a mission to learn everything we could about how seniors think and feel about technology, in order to design a digital experience just for them.
After three years and hundreds of interactions, we arrived at a set of design principles that form the foundation of our platform.
Fonts, colors, contrast, density of information, ease of navigation – every component of OdessaConnect is optimized for the older user.
The platform consists of proprietary hardware and software that has been developed in collaboration with a distinguished medical advisory board, and rigorously field tested.
Increase Patient Touch with a Comforting Virtual Visit
Tom's health had started to deteriorate and he hadn't been feeling well during the last visit with his hospice nurse, Sarah. She suggested a new program her hospice had been testing called OdessaConnect to increase the number of weekly check-ins.
At first, Tom was skeptical – he'd never been good with new technology. But when Sarah appeared on his TV screen at their appointed time, it felt as natural as having her in his living room.
"It's like watching the news, except the news anchor actually talks back to you," Tom jokes with his family. Through his TV, Sarah can clearly see how he's moving, assess his color, and notice subtle changes in his condition. When he showed her the swelling in his ankles, the large screen made it easy for her to evaluate the situation.
During their virtual visits, Tom uses his familiar TV remote to answer Sarah's questions about his symptoms and comfort levels. When he mentioned increasing discomfort, Sarah was able to adjust his care plan immediately. "The best part," Tom says, "is that I don't have to get dressed up or tire myself out when I'm not feeling strong."
Increased communication with your hospice patients equates to the following:
Separate your hospice from the others when a family is making this critical decision for end-of-life care.
The more contact you have with your patients the more control you have with their personalized care plan.
Having a tool that provides access to your patient, virtually (not through a Zoom call on a laptop), allows for better diagnosis of a health issue.
The more data you have - the more efficient your schedule becomes.
Having the ability to connect with your patients relieves family anxiety.
The average length under hospice care is around 70 days.
Hospice nurses visit patients on average 2-3 times per week.
Through OdessaConnect, your hospice can touch your patients and families 7 days a week.
Providing exceptional care is why we do this. Expanding care services through technology, that is portable, helps earn additional referrals and increases survey scores.
OdessaConnect turns the TV into a two-way communication portal. No apps, downloads, or passwords. Designed to be safe and simple.
Control your TV and navigate OdessaConnect with one remote. Designed in collaboration with geriatric specialists, our universal remote is easy to see, hold, and operate.
No spam, no junk mail, no robocalls. Only people you approve can join you on OdessaConnect.
Family, friends, caregivers. Respond with a voice message or hop on a video call with one click. Simple and safe.
Connecting Across Generations, Across the Country
Eleanor looks forward to every Sunday afternoon when her TV screen comes to life with her grandchildren's faces. Since her family was introduced to OdessaConnect, distance no longer keeps them apart. Her three grandchildren in Seattle – ages 8, 12, and 15 – gather around their device while Eleanor settles into her comfortable chair in Florida, using only her familiar TV remote to answer their call.
"Show us your new painting, Grandma!" they exclaim, and Eleanor proudly holds up her latest watercolor to the screen. The large TV display means she can see every detail of their expressions as they ooh and aah over her work. Her youngest granddaughter demonstrates her latest ballet moves, twirling in front of the camera, while Eleanor watches on her big screen, catching every graceful movement.
Eleanor knows these Sunday afternoon visits will end soon. Her only wish is that her grandchildren remember these times when she is gone. The distance between them is difficult, but she’s grateful that OdessaConnect was provided by the wonderful hospice she had chosen to help care for her during these remaining months.
Final Thoughts:
The team at HospicePass meets companies that provide products or services that can make someone’s end-of-life journey exceptional.
We look at the current hospice environment and know that small changes can make a difference - not only to your patients, their families, your hospice as a business, and your team that provides the care with compassion and professionalism.
OdessaConnect is one of those companies. At first glance, their service is designed for in-home care and senior living facilities. However, based on the care plan for those who have chosen hospice - this is a game-changer.
Minimizing family stress and anxiety for the situation they face happens by providing the ability to communicate with you and your team. The more that happens, the more time they can spend on the important things.
Providing tools to your team of caregivers that increase the ability to gather information regarding their patients makes a difference. Today it may be a frantic phone call. Tomorrow it could be a call through OdessaConnect, where you can see your patient and identify the immediate challenge within the surroundings. Talk your families off the ledge - virtually and visually.
Unfortunately what we do is a business. Finding ways to lower costs, and increase service, is critical to maintaining and growing a successful hospice. We must continue to build our brands because earning future referrals is critical for the business. When you include these extra services that others don’t or refuse to, you always come out on top.
